The president hasn’t exactly ever sought to hide his intense displeasure with the Russia inquiry, going after the special counsel on what are now numerous occasions. He shouldn’t have anything to worry about if he’s as innocent as he claims to be, but here we are anyway.
On Friday, some of the president’s allies in the investigation — the Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee — released a redacted version of a report summarizing their findings after having moved recently to conclude their committee’s inquiry.
Unsurprisingly, the report sought to clear the Trump campaign on charges of involvement with Russian interests. Republicans on the committee were unable to get Democrats on board with their report, and the minority produced their own document outlining apparent flaws in the Republicans’ methods and conclusions.
Even still, the president took to Twitter to tout the fact that Republicans announced they had found no evidence of Trump team collusion, and in so doing, he took yet another opportunity to go after Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
‘House Intelligence Committee rules that there was NO COLLUSION between the Trump Campaign and Russia. As I have been saying all along, it is all a big Hoax by the Democrats based on payments and lies. There should never have been a Special Counsel appointed. Witch Hunt!’
That tweet came after a similar statement offered earlier in the day on Friday.
Saying the phrase “witch hunt” over and over again is not going to make the investigation go away.
There remain serious, pressing questions about Russian involvement in our political system that deserve to be answered, but instead of laying off the justice system and letting it do its job, this partisan nonsense is what we’ve got from the commander-in-chief.
