The president has long established himself as no fan of the press, and he hasn’t toned that hatred down at all over the course of his time in office. Numerous interests have sounded the alarm at Trump’s attacks on the press, and rightfully so, since overseas, many journalists are in near continuous danger of persecution because of their work reporting the truth. Many are forced to print only government propaganda messages.
None of this stopped the president from going after journalists operating overseas late this Saturday. He took his incessant attacks on the press to yet another new level, writing:
@FoxNews is MUCH more important in the United States than CNN, but outside of the U.S., CNN International is still a major source of (Fake) news, and they represent our Nation to the WORLD very poorly. The outside world does not see the truth from them!’
CNN International reporters cover important stories, including, most recently, the story of migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa being sold as slaves in Libya.
The individuals were trying, in many cases, to get to Europe, but they couldn’t pay off the smugglers helping them along. The journalists involved in producing the story, including Nima Elbagir, put their very lives on the line to obtain documentation of the alleged slave trading, and the reporting prompted swift international attention.
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres commented:
‘I abhor these appalling acts and call upon all authorities to investigate these activities without delay and bring the perpetrators to justice.’
Anes Alazabi, described by CNN as “an official with the internationally recognized government of Libya’s Anti-Illegal Immigration Agency,” promised an investigation into the reporting, saying:
‘A high-level committee has been convened encompassing representatives from all the security apparatus to oversee this investigation… Priorities of the investigation are not only to convict those responsible for these inhumane acts, but also to identify the location of those who have been sold in order to bring them to safety and return them to their countries of origin.’
Trump doesn’t care about any of this and prefers to shout about how great he thinks Fox News is.
