On Saturday night, the president took his incessant attacks on the news media to yet another new level, going after CNN International, because of course he did.
He wrote a belligerent message proclaiming that Fox News is “MUCH more important” than CNN in the U.S., bemoaning the fact that his favorite cable news station hasn’t taken off overseas like CNN has.
Former FBI Director James Comey — who Trump fired from his position as head of the FBI back in May — responded perfectly to Trump’s latest attack on the free press, posting a quote from Thomas Jefferson. Comey didn’t even have to mention Trump by name for everyone to know what he was talking about. He simply posted his tweet shortly after his old boss tweeted.
Comey wrote, alongside an image of the U.S. Capitol building:
‘“Our liberty depends on the freedom of the press, and that cannot be limited without being lost.” – Thomas Jefferson, Jan. 28, 1786’
Comey is, of course, very right in his application of this quote from Jefferson to this situation.
“America” really was a good and noble idea at its outset, and we shouldn’t let belligerent fools like Donald Trump distract us from that fact. It takes a lot of work to maintain — it always has and it always will — but the idea of what makes America what it is has remained embedded within it for centuries. That core American identity, as enshrined in the Constitution – which is itself a “living” document that can be updated to fit the needs of the time — will far outlast incompetent fools like Trump.
