On Friday, hundreds of Egyptian Muslims lost their lives when Islamist militants attacked their mosque. The militants weren’t immediately identified, but the presumption is that they’re affiliated with the Islamic State terror group.
Remarkably, the president declined to initially use the occasion of the attack to push the racist nonsense that makes up his policy platform — but he didn’t stay away from the racism for long.
He eventually tweeted a message reading, in part:
‘We have to get TOUGHER AND SMARTER than ever before, and we will. Need the WALL, need the BAN! God bless the people of Egypt.’
Trump’s longstanding proposal to ban travelers to the U.S. from Muslim-majority countries is absolutely irrelevant to the situation of the Egypt terror attack — and yet here Trump is tweeting about it anyway. It’s not even as though individuals from the countries Trump wants to ban travelers from have even carried out any attack against the U.S. in recent history.
The same line of reasoning is applicable to Trump’s completely irrelevant and racist assertion that a wall between the U.S. and Mexico is a good idea. Immigrants from Mexico and the rest of Central and South America do not commit crimes at a higher rate than native residents of this country — and yet here Trump is, pushing for his racist, pointless wall anyway.
