President Trump’s crusade against “fake news” has never been about advancing the cause of truth; it’s always been, rather, about clearing the way for his own fact-free agenda.
That’s why, this week, when it was convenient for him to bash the nation’s justice officials, facts didn’t hold him back.
On Wednesday, Trump wrote on Twitter:
‘Why didn’t A.G. Sessions replace Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, a Comey friend who was in charge of Clinton investigation but got big dollars ($700,000) for his wife’s political run from Hillary Clinton and her representatives. Drain the Swamp!’
It’s bad enough for Trump to be working here to undercut the legitimacy of our nation’s law enforcement officials’ positions. He’s now railed on Twitter against Sessions and McCabe on Twitter multiple times.
That’s not where the problem ends, however. What Trump is saying here isn’t even accurate. McCabe wasn’t in charge of the Clinton email investigation, and his wife didn’t get any money from Hillary Clinton. Additionally, McCabe had no connection to the money that his wife did get from the PAC of Clinton supporting Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe.
