Donald Trump has long maintained an air of freedom from political and social norms, and it was no different on Tuesday morning when President Trump offered up his young son Barron Trump as a punching bag in an angry Twitter rant.
Trump’s rant came in the context of his ongoing effort to undercut the legitimacy of the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election and his team’s possible collision in those efforts.
‘Jared Kushner did very well yesterday in proving he did not collude with the Russians. Witch Hunt. Next up, 11 year old Barron Trump!’
Trump is referring in his tweet to his son-in-law’s appearance before a private convening of the Senate Intelligence Committee on Monday. Although Trump wants to paint the meeting as a positive step towards clearing his team, in reality, it represented a shift in his team’s stance from denial of any contact with Russians to denial of any collusion with Russians.
There is, obviously, a difference between those two things. Still, according to Trump, things couldn’t be better.
It’s ironic for Trump to rhetorically offer his son to those who would scrutinize his Twitter feed when he has so often attacked his opponents when they bring up his son. Double standards, anyone?
