Most of the time, Republicans try and keep their low opinions of those who face hardships in life to themselves. Even still, widespread GOP and political establishment opinions of poor people remain clear, with the consensus among those on the right being that if certain segments of society “just worked harder” everything would be just fine.
Well, pushing for “working harder” as a way to climb your way out of poverty, is, in theory, a decent argument. But then sometimes Republicans just let their bitter, vitriolic attitudes show, and such was very much the case this week when former House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz posted to Instagram.
His post is a photo of an unidentified homeless person in New York City who is on their phone. Apparently, the fact that this person is using his phone means that they’re not “suffering enough” to have compassion for — or something.
The post is captioned: “NYC Times Sq 6:53am streaming video on a phone.” It’s featured below.
Understandably, the post has garnered a great deal of controversy due to its insensitivity towards the plight of this person.
There are an unsurprisingly large number of angry Instagram comments, a selection of which are below.
