The president took to Twitter this Tuesday — as he does so many days — to rant about the ongoing investigation into his team’s possible ties to Russian efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election.
The latest target of Trump’s attacks is the Acting Director of the FBI, Andrew McCabe. Trump has suggested recently that Hillary Clinton should face legal consequences for her supposed crimes of maintaining a private email server, and on Tuesday, he managed to tie this into McCabe.
In so doing, however, he also spouted off literal fake news.
He wrote Tuesday morning:
‘Problem is that the acting head of the FBI & the person in charge of the Hillary investigation, Andrew McCabe, got $700,000 from H for wife!’
There’s one problem with Trump’s tweet — McCabe did not get $700,000 from Hillary Clinton for his wife. McCabe’s wife was running for office in the state of Virginia, and got a large amount of donations from the Hillary Clinton supporting Governor of Virginia’s PAC.
There’s a major difference there. Additionally, McCabe himself neither had anything to do with the Hillary investigation or with the transfer of the money to his wife’s political campaign.
In short, nice try Trump, but those who actually take the time to check out your claims can quickly debunk them. Better luck next time.
