Ah, the masters of spin are back.
Apparently the official GOP social media team is on crack or something, because they’ve been posting a lot of weird stuff on Twitter on the occasion of former FBI Director James Comey’s testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee.
Late Thursday morning, as Comey’s testimony was underway, @GOP posted a short clip of Comey’s testimony, captioning it “.
@POTUS never interfered in Comey’s investigations. Glad we had a #ComeyHearing. #BigLeagueTruth.”
There’s just one problem. In the clip that the GOP posted, Comey doesn’t say that the President never tried to interfere in any of his agency’s investigations. Rather, Comey says that the President never attempted to get him to stop his investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election.
That is a distinct issue from the question of whether or not and to what capacity the Trump team sought to collude with those efforts. In fact, Comey confirmed at a different point in the hearing that Trump did make a request of him to stop the investigation into Michael Flynn for suspected collusion with the Russian meddling efforts.
In short, nice try GOP. but not so fast.
