A (now former) State Department employee has been arrested on charges related to allegations that she has worked for years in cooperation with Chinese intelligence agents.
The 60 year old Candace Marie Claiborne has worked in a number of positions throughout her years at the State Department, starting there in 1999, according to a press release from the Department of Justice. These posts have been in locations including Baghdad, Iraq, Khartoum, Sudan, and Beijing and Shanghai, China.
Claiborne allegedly passed sensitive information to Chinese intelligence agents in exchange for gifts including “cash wired to Claiborne’s USAA account, an Apple iPhone and laptop computer, Chinese New Year’s gifts, meals, international travel and vacations, tuition at a Chinese fashion school, a fully furnished apartment, and a monthly stipend.”
These gifts came over a period of five years.
Claiborne, who was originally arrested in late March, has pled not guilty.
