We all feel you, Chancellor Merkel.
Speaking following her meeting with Donald Trump at a Sunday election rally in Munich, Germany, Merkel said that Germany can no longer rely on its alliances with the United States and Britain.
The U.S., of course, has been gripped with a virulently nationalist fervor that’s coincided with Trump’s rise to power, while Britain has been gripped with a similarly nationalist fervor coinciding with the passage of Brexit and the U.K.’s anticipated departure from the EU.
With all of this in mind, Merkel told a crowd of Germans: “The times in which we could completely depend on others are on the way out. I’ve experienced that in the last few days.”
Merkel attended a G7 summit, at which she met with Donald Trump and the rest of the G7 countries’ leadership, late last week.
The German election is on September 24, and AFP says that polls are in Merkel’s favor.
It’s what she did after making the above, morbid post-Trump meeting remarks that’s the relatable thing.
NBC’s Bradd Jaffy posted a few photos on Twitter of Merkel downing large cups of beer, captioning them, “Merkel after mtg w/Trump: ‘times in which we could rely fully on others, they are somewhat over.’ Then she did this.”
