A Republican Congressional candidate literally just body slammed a reporter.
No, this is not a joke.
The candidate is Republican Greg Gianforte, who is running to fill the empty Montana Congressional seat left by Ryan Zinke’s assumption of the position of Secretary of the Interior.
The reporter is Ben Jacobs of The Guardian.
Jacobs announced the incident with a simple tweet, writing, “Greg Gianforte just body slammed me and broke my glasses.”
According to multiple accounts, a local tv crew was present, with Jacobs having been supposed to interview Gianforte at the time this incident occurred.
Audio released by The Guardian of the incident is below.
Buzzfeed reporter Alexis Levinson was there, and she explained the situation on Twitter, in part, as follows:
‘This happened behind a half closed door, so I didn’t see it all, but here’s what it looked like from the outside — Ben walked into a room where a local tv crew was set up for an interview with Gianforte. All of a sudden I heard a giant crash and saw Ben’s feet fly in the air as he hit the floor.’
The last update is that police were taking witness statements and Gianforte — as depicted in the photo below — left the premises an hour and fifteen minutes ahead of schedule after talking with police.
UPDATE: Local police are “investigating allegations of an assault involving Greg Gianforte.”
