The Associated Press is reporting that an individual believed to be a former student of Transylvania University in Kentucky attacked a current student of the school with a machete in an incident appeared to be motivated by President Donald Trump’s incessant, months long and still continuing campaign of hate speech.
It is important to note that the assailant — who has not been named — may be suffering from a mental disorder.
Student Tristan Reynolds described the incident to a local newspaper, saying:
“A guy came in, banged something, a hatchet or an ax, on the table and said ‘the day of reckoning has come.’ He asked somebody what their political affiliation was, they said ‘Republican’ and the guy said ‘you are safe.’ And then I realized what was going on and started getting people out.”
The one individual to be injured in the incident sustained only non-life threatening injuries.
The assailant is undergoing “evaluation” at a local hospital.
This incident is obviously far from the first time that Trump’s hateful rhetoric has manifested in a crime. Rates of hate crimes against Jews and Muslims have spiked since his election.
