Mike Allen of Axios is reporting that Ivanka Trump has told him that she is developing a foundation.
The catch? Ivanka will be accepting and has already begun securing donations to that foundation from foreign governments.
‘Ivanka Trump told me… that she has begun building a massive fund that will benefit female entrepreneurs around the globe. Both countries and companies will contribute to create a pool of capital to economically empower women… Canadians, Germans and a few Middle Eastern countries have already made quiet commitments, as have several corporations, a source said.’
There’s an obvious problem, here, however.
Ivanka has an official role in the White House. Her stature in her father’s presidential administration is so noteworthy that it was suggested at one point that she was the one responsible for Trump’s change of heart over Syria that led to the recent U.S. strike on a Syrian government airfield.
And she’s going to be accepting donations from foreign governments? Seriously?
That’s like How to Create a Conflict of Interest 101. It’s not even immediately clear if it’s legal or not.
Other members of the Trump team, including the President himself, have long come under fire for coming up with ways to preserve their financial ties to foreign interests that they’re supposed to be dealing with in an unbiased fashion while in the White House.
