The renowned pollster known as Public Policy Polling has just released a new survey, and nestled among the results of the many different questions on which they gauged public opinion is the following sobering statement:
‘39% of voters think [Trump] will get the United States into World War III during his Presidency, to just 40% of voters who don’t think he’s going to have that effect.’
These voters’ sobering opinion isn’t unfounded.
President Trump continues to show himself to have little to no regard to the established ways of conducting diplomacy. President Trump’s preferred foreign policy method of using bombs for everything is like How To Start A War 101.
For instance, the United States recently conducted a strike on a Syrian government airfield that was billed as “retaliation” for a recent chemical weapons attack on Syrian civilians. That strike, however, was carried out based on insufficient evidence pointing to the Assad regime as actually responsible for the chemical weapons deaths. In addition, the airfield which we struck remains fully operational.
Shortly following that debacle, the Trump Administration announced plans to send a U.S. Navy strike group to the waters off North Korea as a confrontational show of force against the country’s nuclear weapons program. North Korea responded by asserting that nuclear war could break out “any minute,” depending on the Trump Administration’s future policy decisions.
With these, and other issues in mind, it’s really no surprise that well over a third of Americans think that we’re headed for World War III. They might not actually be wrong.
